I was having a discussion with my boyfriend about actors who are good looking and actors who are charismatic. It started with a simple question of whether I find George Clooney attractive, to which I answered, “no.” Is that surprising? I admit that George Clooney is good looking, but he’s not my cup of tea. Possibly in large part because he’s not really “pretty,” and I have a thing for the pretty boys, and my boyfriend is very pretty.
But how does that explain my infatuation with Robert Downey Jr.?
Oodles and oodles of charisma, is what I say. He’s roguishly good looking, and he has oodles of charisma just pouring out of him. My friend M and I agree that when it comes to so many famous men, what we fancy is not so much their physical attractiveness, but their talent. When someone is so good at something—singing, dancing, acting, sports—completely and thoroughly, they become attractive regardless of physical qualities.
So you judge him now, Mrs. Mary Watson née Morstan, but soon you’ll admit that he is the hottest consultant detective ever.
